Corporate Social Responsibility
Health, sport, education, culture and environment: the commitments Pharco has carried in its communities for decades.

Pharco's social responsibility work runs across four fields: health, sport, education, and culture and environment. From renovating hospitals that serve millions of patients to sponsoring Egypt's athletes, building schools and funding research institutes, the corporation has invested in the communities it serves for as long as it has made medicine.

Pharco renovated "The Hadara University Hospital", formerly known as Nariman Hospital, to provide a better free service for the people in need, as it serves around 5 million people.
Nariman Hospital was established in 1886 and built by the German community, who named it Borussia. In the wake of World War II the hospital was called "The Anglo-Swiss Hospital", and then "The Princess Fawzia Hospital". When Farouk I University was established in 1948 the hospital was purchased, and in 1950 it took the name "Nariman Hospital" after the marriage of King Farouk I and Queen Nariman. After the 1952 revolution it was renamed "The Hadara University Hospital", with a capacity of 400 beds.
The hospital currently has three departments: two for orthopaedic surgery and one for neurology and psychiatry. In 1987 it was renovated entirely through voluntary contributions from donors, adding operating rooms furnished with modern machines, recovery rooms and an intensive care unit.
The reconstruction of a historical 100-year-old building, after it had been working at only 10% of its capacity due to structural defects. Pharco's most recent accomplishment was opening a medical convoy in Alexandria University Hospital, after the project had been put on hold for 16 years for lack of funding. Pharco was determined to complete it, and once the building process was done the corporation supplied it with the necessary equipment. Today the convoy serves two million patients yearly from Alexandria and nearby governorates.

There is a large amount of scientific evidence on the positive effects of sport and physical activity in the prevention of several chronic diseases. That is why Pharco has invested heavily in sport and in athletes: to us, prevention is equally as important as treatment.

Sponsoring "The Artist" Ramy Ashour, one of the most technically gifted players ever to play the game of squash and a real fan favourite. He reached the world number one ranking in January 2010. Pharco also sponsored a digital campaign to support squash becoming an Olympic sport.

Pharco believes in the great value of education. The corporation built schools in Borg Al Arab and Alexandria and restored schools that collapsed in the 1992 earthquake. To encourage students to give back to their community, Pharco donated to the Science Park, a state-of-the-art research facility at Alexandria University's Faculty of Pharmacy.
Pharco has also contributed to feeding primary school students in different places, and has given school students 72 million capsules of Firozink, an anaemia treatment that was not available in pharmacies but was produced especially for school students.
